ClassGuard guide for schools
This guide is for the people who set ClassGuard up at a school: the principal, the office and the school admins. You do not need to be good with computers. Each step says what to tap.
ClassGuard is built by Kryft (kryft.dev).
What ClassGuard does for your school
- Teachers teach live video classes in the app.
- During class, each student's Android phone stays inside ClassGuard. After class the phone works normally.
- Teachers see attendance and who is paying attention.
- Parents see their child's day and reports.
- Your school's data stays your school's. No other school can ever see it.
1. Register your school
- Open the ClassGuard web app or the Android app.
- Create your own account. Tick I confirm I am an adult (18+).
- Choose Register a school.
- Fill in the School name, a short School code, your Contact email and (if you like) a Contact phone.
- Tick I confirm I am an adult (18+).
- Tick the box that says your school has parents' permission to use ClassGuard.
- Tap Submit application.
About the parents' permission box: it is a promise from the school to ClassGuard. It says you have told parents about ClassGuard and they agree. You cannot add students until it is ticked. Parents also give their own permission for focus tracking inside the app (see section 7).
If your school registered before this box existed, you will be asked to tick it the next time an admin signs in.
2. Wait for approval
After you submit, you see the Your application page. A ClassGuard team member checks it. Tap Check again to refresh. When it is approved, tap Continue to dashboard.
Example: you apply on Monday morning. You tap Check again after lunch and see "Approved".
3. Set up grades, sections and subjects
Open the Overview tab. Go to the structure page, then:
- Add grade: for example Grade 6.
- Add sections to the grade: for example A and B. You get Grade 6-A and Grade 6-B.
- Add subject: for example Maths. Subjects belong to a grade. Mark a subject as Core or Elective.
If a grade has no sections yet, you cannot add students to it. The app tells you "Not ready yet" and what is missing.
You can edit or delete a grade, section or subject. Deleting asks you to confirm.
4. Add teachers
- Open the staff page and tap the invite button.
- Type the teacher's email. Choose Teacher (or Admin for another office person).
- The teacher gets an email with an invite code. Codes look like
XXXX-XXXX. - The teacher creates an account, chooses to join a school, and types the code.
You can Resend invite, Revoke invite, Suspend a teacher or Remove them. To bring back a suspended teacher, use Reactivate. Revoking and resetting passwords ask you to hold the button down, so nobody does it by accident.
5. Add students
Students never sign themselves up. The school adds them.
One at a time
On the Students page, add a student. You give a name, grade and section, and a roll number. The roll number is the student's login name, so each one must be different inside your school. Roll numbers can be made automatically from a template in Settings (the "Roll number template").
Many at once
Tap Import CSV. Then:
- Tap Copy template or Use template, and fill it in with a spreadsheet.
- Tap Choose file, then Check file. The app tells you about mistakes before anything is saved.
- Fix the file if needed, and finish the import.
Printed login sheets
After students are created, a credential batch is made. It holds each student's roll number and a first password. Open Credential batches (from the Students page, Batches) to download or print the sheets. Give each child their own slip.
For safety, downloading a batch asks you to confirm your own password first ("re-auth"). The same check appears when you reset a student's password.
When a student forgets a password, open the student, tap Reset password (hold the button) and print the new sheet.
When a student leaves
Open the student and hold Hold to mark as left. Their old records stay. You can Reactivate them later.
6. Link parents
Each student can have parents or guardians linked. A parent creates their own ClassGuard account and links to their child. After that the parent sees the child's schedule, reports and controls. The student's phone must be approved by a linked parent before it can be used (see the parents guide).
7. Parents' permission for focus tracking
Focus tracking uses the phone's front camera, on the phone only. Only numbers leave the phone. It stays off for a child until a linked parent agrees in the app. A parent can switch it off again at any time. You can see how many families have agreed on your school's pages. The school's own choice does not replace the parent's.
8. Timetables, classes and substitutes
Teachers and admins create courses and classes. A class can be:
- Repeats weekly (the normal timetable),
- One-off, or
- an ad-hoc class started right now.
When you pick a time, ClassGuard checks for clashes. It will warn you if the teacher, or a student, is already in another class at that time. If a teacher is away, use Assign substitute on the class. The substitute teacher gets the class for that day only.
Teachers can give a class a break and can End class. The room opens 2 minutes before the class starts.
9. HD teacher video setting
By default the teacher's video is sent at a lighter quality. This keeps data use and cost down. In your school settings there is a switch for HD teacher video. Turn it on if your teachers need a sharper picture and your students have good internet. Screen sharing is always sharp.
10. Reports
Teachers and admins can open reports for a student: attendance, how focused the student was, hand-ins and teacher notes. Parents get a weekly and a monthly report. Anyone who can see a report can download it as a PDF. Reports are kept for 1 year.
11. Support tickets
If a teacher or student has a problem, they use Report a problem. That request goes to your school's admin first. Open the Support tab. You can answer it yourself or send it on to ClassGuard. A ClassGuard team member then replies in the same thread.
12. Billing basics
Open the Billing tab. You see:
- Seats in use: how many students, teachers and admins are active.
- Estimated bill: worked out from the highest number of accounts you had during the month ("peak"). It is not prorated.
- Your invoices.
In Settings you can set seat limits. At the limit, adding more accounts is stopped, so your bill stays predictable. If billing is blocked, the app tells you and asks you to contact ClassGuard.
13. Privacy: consent, deletion and retention
- ClassGuard never sells data, never shows ads and never uses data to train AI.
- No photo, video or voice of a child leaves the phone. Class video is never recorded.
- Detailed child activity (focus numbers, chat, phone events) is kept 90 days. Reports, attendance and marks are kept 1 year.
- When an account is deleted, it is switched off at once and erased within 30 days.
- A school admin account that is the only admin cannot be deleted until another admin takes over or the school is closed.
Read the documents your school agrees to: the school agreement, the privacy policy, how long we keep data and the security overview.
14. What students need
- An Android 10 or newer phone with a front camera.
- Internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
- The ClassGuard app from Google Play, or from the download page at classguard.dev.
The student lock works on Android only. iPhones cannot be locked, so they cannot be used for class.
Student phone setup (first time)
- Install ClassGuard. Open it.
- Sign in with the school code, roll number and the password from the login sheet.
- Change the password when asked.
- Follow the setup screens. They ask for a few permissions (camera, notifications, overlay, accessibility, battery). Each screen says why.
- The phone shows a code. A parent approves the phone in their own app (Approve new phone). Until then the phone waits.
- Once approved, the phone is ready. At class time, it locks into ClassGuard and the student joins the waiting room.
